RUSH: There's a story out of New York. This is in the New York Daily News today. This is going to be interesting. "Stung by Carl Paladino's below-the-belt attacks, an angry Andrew Cuomo summoned his war council on Monday to figure out how to fight back against his slash-and-burn GOP rival." Cuomo sits here with his aides and says: What the hell do we do? "'If a guy says you have no cojones, how do you punch him back...?'" What do we do? Cuomo is sitting there, he's all ticked off. We got all this stuff on Paladino, and we're on the defensive? Here's what you need to know. It's still the lead story at Drudge. Andrew Cuomo's weakness, and everybody in New York knows this -- little dirty secret here. Andrew Cuomo's weakness is that Democrats are afraid of him because of his history of being a hothead and a thug as a campaign manager for his dad, Mario. The Democrats are resigned to his winning rather than enthusiastic about it. They figure there's nothing they can do about it. They just resigned to it. But here comes Paladino. Now, what's Paladino done? Here's Paladino's strategery. He's gonna blast Cuomo as a longtime Albany insider, not a reformer. He's gonna blame him for sparking the subprime mortgage crisis while he was the HUD secretary. A valid charge. Hhe is gonna rip him for not opposing the Muslim cultural center at Ground Zero. Carl Paladino is gonna highlight Cuomo's ties to special interest groups, including the Working Families Party, and he's gonna try to bait Cuomo into losing his cool, which will not be hard to do because Cuomo is a famous, famous hothead. So Paladino has run some advertisements here that just mock Cuomo, like you're not supposed to mock him. We're not supposed to mock Mario The Pious. You're not supposed to make fun of these people. (interruption) Oh, yeah, I saw the shower ad. I tell you, when we get to the debates between Paladino and Cuomo, this is going to be nationally televised stuff. I mean, Paladino is fearless. He's just taking it right to him. He's saying what you would say about a Cuomo. He's saying what I would say. There is no political correctness about it; there is no standard political decorum to it. "Hey, this guy is fundamentally responsible for the subprime mortgage crisis and he's got a pass on it! He was at HUD. He was the enforcer. He was strong-arming all these banks to make these loans! He was one of the originators of it." Now, the overreaction to Paladino's ad is vulgar and it plays into all the Democrat public fears that Andrew Cuomo's the same bully and punk they had to deal with in the eighties. See, nobody's gonna tell you this because the Cuomos are like royalty in New York. But you Democrats in New York know what I'm talking about. But back during the eighties, he was his dad's campaign manager. He was the enforcer. He was Mr. Thug, Mr. Tough guy. He didn't mess around, and he did not make a whole lot of friends. Like I said, New York Democrats are resigned. They're not all that enthusiastic. They're resigned to it. Now, this race, when it started out, was 60 to 23, Cuomo. That was 37 points. It has now tightened to 54-38 in three weeks. This is per Rasmussen. That's 16 points. Now, 16 points is not insurmountable. Christie Whitman was 30 points behind in early October in her first run for governor of New Jersey. Now, if Mario's kids' support, if Andrew Cuomo's support falls below 50% you're gonna see some panic in both party establishments. Yes, both (laughing) because there are some Republicans that are gonna freak if Paladino wins this. I mean, the ruling class, New York elite, liberal Republicans, they're just going to have a fit. Now, 54% is Andrew Cuomo's number. Folks, that's a horrible number for Andrew Cuomo in New York, running for governor? A Cuomo, at 54, down from 60 in three weeks? If you aren't planning by now to vote for Andrew Cuomo after he's been a public figure for 25 years, you're not gonna fall in love with this guy by Election Day. |

| It just isn't going to happen. Look, there was a rumor during the Ed Koch days. Snerdley, you'll remember this. There was a rumor during the Koch days. Remember the line? "Vote for Cuomo, Not the Homo," and it was rumored that Andrew came up with that line. We gotta give credit where credit is due. Nobody's ever been able to prove it, but it was always thought that it was Andrew who came up with that line. Now, Paladino knows nothing but the truth. He's one of these guys that's like my brother. Whatever he's feeling, he'll say it. If he's constipated he'll tell you he's constipated and ask you if you are and how you deal with it. Paladino, there's no governor here, and what he says is just the truth. The Village Voice has exposed Andrew Cuomo's involvement in the housing meltdown. The Village Voice has! And Paladino, of course, has picked it up, and Paladino has millions of dollars. He's willing to put his own money where his mouth is. Oh, this is going to be good, folks. I'm telling you, they're stunned: 54% a Cuomo in New York? Against this guy? Remember, you have to understand, this is a Tea Party guy. This Carl Paladino may as well be Palin or Christine O'Donnell as far as the New York Democrats are concerned, and he's only down 16 points. We'll be keeping a sharp eye on this. And I'll tell you what. I said both parties. "[T]he New York gubernatorial candidacy of Carl Paladino," this is Peter Robinson, "is turning into a joy to behold. The latest? Former U.S. Sen. Alfonse D'Amato, former New York City Mayor Ed Koch, and former State Comptroller Carl McCall issued an open letter, calling Paladino 'unfit' and 'dangerous' -- and ... "In the Buffalo News, columnist Donn Esmonde cuts loose: 'Al D'Amato, Ed Koch and Carl McCall took it upon themselves Wednesday to stand up for the sanctity of elective office in this state. Unfortunately, there is no such thing. I barely got past the letter's second sentence: "This state has a long history of electing highly qualified, forward-looking statewide candidates."'" This is what these three guys wrote. Here we are in the midst of the Paterson regime and we've had Scozzafava. We've had nothing but corruption in this state. And these guys say Paladino's unqualified because of "a long history of electing highly qualified, forward-looking statewide candidates." Spitzer? Exactly! Spitzer, Client No. 9. Donn Esmonde writes, "These guys must have been passing around a bong. The state has a history all right. In recent years, we had a governor resign after a sex scandal. We had a felonious state comptroller resign in disgrace. We had the ex-Senate majority leader -- one of Albany's triumvirate of power -- jailed for violating the public trust. Our current governor admitted to marital infidelities and past drug use, and was targeted in a baseball ticket scandal. And that is just the shortlist. In that company, Carl Paladino ... raises the bar..." (laughing) This guy writes that in the Buffalo News. Oh, this is going to be good. And at the center of this is Andrew Cuomo. We're gonna keep a sharp eye on it, folks. A sharp eye. Cuomo doesn't know what to do! we Paladino is under this guy's skin. "He's got no cojones." You don't say that about a Cuomo! They're saying, "How do we deal with this?" They thought it was going to be dealing with a joke and a pushover. |

BREAK TRANSCRIPTRUSH: I'm going to show you the shower ad, for those of you watching on the Dittocam. I'm gonna zoom in here. This is a flyer ad. Carl Paladino's campaign is sending this flyer to its e-mail lists and encouraging Tea Party supporters to print it out. It's title is: "Clean up Albany?" and it's a filthy Andrew Cuomo in the shower. I'm zooming in now for those of you on the Dittocam to be able to see it. Cuomo is wearing a gold chain, and they're upset. They think it's an Italian stereotype to put Andrew Cuomo in a gold chain. I mean this is hilarious. This is the Carl Paladino flyer. They're urging the Tea Party people to print this out and pass it around all over the place. "Clean up Albany? Start with Cuomo." We have a couple of Cuomo sound bites, by the way, April 3rd, 1998, Department of Housing and Urban Development, Cuomo held a press conference about discrimination in public housing. CUOMO: Discrimination isn't always that obvious, sometimes more subtle but in many ways more insidious, an institutionalized discrimination that's hidden behind a smiling face. Housing agents who say, "Well, there are no vacancies right now," that you just didn't qualify for the mortgage because your financial credit history wasn't good enough. About 15,000 families we estimate will get mortgages who would not have gotten mortgages otherwise. But aggressively to take a greater risk on these mortgages, yes, to give families mortgages who they would not have given otherwise? Yes.RUSH: All right, here's the guy, here's Andrew Cuomo responsible in part as HUD director for the subprime mortgage crisis. Carl Paladino pointing it out and they're calling Carl Paladino a dirty campaigner. Here's more from Andrew Cuomo, April 3rd, 1988.CUOMO: It is by income, and is it also by minorities? Yes. With the $2.1 billion lending that amount in mortgages, which will be a higher risk, and I'm sure there will be a higher default rate on those mortgages than on the rest of the portfolio. That is the remedy that we sought and the remedy that I would prefer, 15,000 families. This is of a scope so beyond anything that we've really done in the past.RUSH: I've always thought Andrew Cuomo sounded like his dad, Mario, but he sounds like Barney Frank to me. This was affordable housing. This is why we're where we are. It's not unfunded wars. It's not unfunded tax cuts. This, folks, the subprime mortgage mess, that's why we're where we are, and the guy running for governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo, is at the center of it all. Carl Paladino, most Republicans wouldn't have the guts to point it out. He does. Most Republicans pussyfoot around all this stuff. Paladino's aiming at it.BREAK TRANSCRIPTRUSH: I just remembered this. McCain said during the campaign that he was gonna put Andrew Cuomo at the SEC if he was elected president. We were apoplectic about this. I remember this. He floated that idea right after he picked Palin and everybody said, "Oh, no, Andrew Cuomo at the SEC?" This was McCain reaching across the aisle. |
